Nerve blocks are used with a special needle, and are usually guided by a fluoroscope, an ultrasound, or a CT scan in order to visualize the correct direction of the needle. A medical professional can also apply electrical stimulation with low intensity to identify the nerve that is leading to pain. The guidance images and the needles help inject the medications that help relieve pain or inflammation centered around a nerve or a bundle of nerves.
